Overview

Grocery Savvy's barcode scanner helps you look up products by scanning the barcode on the package. Once a product is recognized, you can review its details and add it to your grocery list.

How to Scan

You can open the barcode scanner from:

  • The Home screen by tapping the barcode icon in the search input
  • The search results screen by tapping the Scan button at the bottom

Then:

  1. Point your camera at the product's barcode.
  2. Wait for Grocery Savvy to identify the product.
  3. Open the product details page to review the item.

What Happens After Scanning

Once a barcode is recognized, you can:

  • View details — See the food item details and learn more about the product.
  • Review tags and preferences — Check dietary tags and how the item aligns with your dietary preferences.
  • Add to list — Add the item to your Grocery List.
  • Add to meals — Add the item to Meals when available.

Scanned items are also saved in Recently Viewed on the Home screen and in search results so you can find them again without scanning a second time.

Supported Barcodes

Grocery Savvy supports standard barcode formats commonly found on grocery products:

  • UPC-A — Standard 12-digit barcodes on most US products.
  • EAN-13 — 13-digit barcodes common internationally.
  • UPC-E — Compressed 8-digit barcodes on smaller packages.

Tips for Best Results

  • Good lighting — Scan in a well-lit area for faster recognition.
  • Steady hand — Hold the camera steady and centered on the barcode.
  • Clean barcode — Make sure the barcode isn't wrinkled, torn, or obscured.

Product Not Found or Not Displaying?

If a scanned product does not appear, common reasons include:

  • The barcode is blurry, damaged, or partially covered
  • The camera needs better lighting or a steadier view
  • The product is not currently in the Grocery Savvy database

You can still use Food Search to look for the item by name, or add a custom item from the search flow if needed.
